Gulf Spill Relief: LJ Gives Back
Recent Entries
ramen girl!
Good evening, lovelies!

First of all, I want to thank each and every one of you for your support! Those of you who offered and bid, those of you who linked people here, and those of you who put in a good word for us when we needed it the most. As I'm not the mod in charge of keeping stats, I can't give an accurate total of how much money the community has raised so far, but I assure you it's a fair chunk of change and those along the Gulf Coast are very grateful to have it.

Thank you so much for helping our beautiful country! ;~;

As you all know, we have just completed the last set of auctions. (If you haven't confirmed your donation with us yet, please do so as soon as possible!) Our community has run its course, the leak has been successfully plugged, and we have achieved much of what we set out to do. Now, it's time to pass the torch. If you still have room in your hearts, time on your hands, and a penchant for bidding on fandom items, please help_pakistan

According to last week's reports from the Associated Press:

The number of people suffering from the massive floods in Pakistan could exceed 13 million — more than the combined total of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the United Nations said Monday.

The death toll in each of those three disasters was much higher than the 1,500 people killed so far in the floods that first hit Pakistan two weeks ago. But the U.N. estimates that 13.8 million people have been affected — over 2 million more than the other disasters combined.

Ladies and gentlemen, there's still work to be done and love to be given. Let's all lend a hand to our brothers in Pakistan! ♥

ETA: I've been told we've raised something like $5500 in total as of right now. Way to go, team!
14th-Aug-2010 09:51 pm - Donation Confirmation: Auction #3
To all offerers: thank you very much! This auction wouldn't have been possible without you! With the auction now at its end, the bidders can start making their donations and confirming to you.

When they do, we'd be very grateful if you left us a note in this post to confirm that they have donated and the amount they donated, using this little template:

This is also an appeal to the offerers from the first and second auction post: if you have not confirmed your donation yet please do so asap in this thread for Auction #1 and here for Auction #2! If you are an Auction #1 or Auction #2 offerer and still have not heard from your bidder, please contact one of the mods. Again, this is for Auctions #1 and #2, not the current auction.

Thank you all so much for your help! You were amazing!
PLEASE READ - Auction Closing Procedure

Please read this post through completely before asking questions.

What will happen?

Bidding ends tomorrow August 14th at 0:00 am EDT (Eastern Daylight Time/US East Coast timezone - the current timezone in New York City) or 4 am UTC (beware: this is 5 am for people in the UK due to Daylight Savings Time) on August 15th. To prevent bids from being shown after that, the community will be screened. Any bids not shown in the community don’t count.

If you are unsure about how much time you have left, you can find a countdown clock here.

Note for offerers: If anyone bids on your offer after the community gets screened, you will get the notification in your inbox if you have notifications turned on. However, the bid does not count anymore. Please disregard any bids placed after the community has been screened.

After a while, the community will be unscreened and the mods will start sending out notifications to the winning bidders. This might take some time.

4th-Aug-2010 04:32 pm - FANTASTIC NEWS, FOLKS!!
YGO GX - Happy Yubel is happy
According to this article from Yahoo!News, the Deepwater Horizon Spill is now in the last stages of being plugged.

This is great news for the wildlife at sea!! However, there's a long way to go onshore, where cleanup efforts will continue--and where fishermen have lost an entire summer's worth of income. Let's make one last push for those who will need a hand to get back on their feet! The second leg has raised $3800 for the people and animals in need (and some of you out there, you know who you are, please contact your bidder or offerer, as applicable, so we can confirm the rest of the bids and push our total for the first and second legs over $5500); let's push for $5000 total for this leg!

Although the leak is finally, hopefully, behind us, Gulf families are now looking at trying to repair their finances just in time for kids to be heading back to school, which will require new clothes for younger kids and supplies for all ages, and regardless of age everyone has to put food on the table. What we are doing here does make an impact, so let's make it as big an impact as possible!!

EDIT: A member of LiveJournal staff sent me an e-mail and told me that the charitable gull and turtle V-gift we released raised an additional $500 for the Emergency Oil Spill Fund started by the National Wildlife Federation, bringing our current total to $5253.95! Thank you to everyone who purchased our symbol of hope so that next year we will see real gulls and real turtles in the Gulf again!

Roll Back 88
Words Post

Hey folks! Welcome to ROUND THREE of gulf_aid_now!! We've changed the rules a bit to make things as easy as possible for everyone (yes, again), so if you're new to the auction, please read them carefully, and if you're a returning offerer or bidder, please reread them so you know what's changed.

This post is for words auctions, such as fanfiction, poetry, or original fiction. If it's of a literary persuasion, it goes here! As a note for those who plan to offer fanfiction: due to concerns about libel and other legal issues (such as breach of privacy), we must ask that offerers refrain from using any real people in their stories who are not historical figures (e.g., King Tut or Albert Einstein). You may identify them as belonging to the universe in which you are writing (e.g., "wanna go see the new Johnny Depp movie?" Tara asked Wynn), but they may not be used as characters.

This set of auctions will end 14 August 2010. Deadline for delivery, unless bidders and offerers work out something privately, is 10 September 2010 (thanks to misura for catching the unedited date for me!). We'd really like to get items to the bidders as soon as possible, so please try to stick to the given date.

Any item that is not illegal in the United States (where this community is based) and is not easily available at a chain store (such as Target or Walmart) can be put up for auction in the appropriate post, including but not limited to fanfiction, fanart, hand-crafts, AMVs, out-of-print manga, imported or foreign items, and original photography. If you can think of it and it meets those two criteria, you can auction it, with one caveat: if the item you are auctioning has an age limit (e.g. alcohol, erotica, etc.), you must state so in your post, and you must also get some kind of confirmation (such as a scanned driver's license or proof that the winning bidder paid their donation with a credit card) that the bidder is 18+ (or 21+, if applicable). This isn't because we're grumps, it's because we don't want to be shut down for doing illegal things. Also, I'd like to give a thanks/shout-out to everyone who did this last time! We really appreciate it.

If you are auctioning something, you must include both a SUBJECT LINE and the template below, filled out. Your subject should be in the format "Type of item: fandoms" or, if you are auctioning something that is not fandom-based, "Type of item with sufficient description" (e.g., "hand-crocheted coaster set" instead of "drink coasters"). The post itself should use the template below:

If you"re a bidder, please click here first.Collapse )

If you need a charity to donate to, there are links provided in the sidebar to some (but by no means all) of the charities working in the Gulf. If you know of a charity that's doing work in the Gulf area that is not listed and you think they should be, feel free to PM a maintainer and we'll try to add it. Please remember that while I ("I" being Nina) have checked sites to make sure these organizations are legit, any organization not listed is one I have not checked. Make sure you know where your money is going--if you suspect a scam, do some research!

And finally:

Please do not chat in the auction posts. Every post should contain either an offer, or a bid (yes, that also means no thanking your bidders until someone has won). Again, this isn't because we're grumps--it's because comment space is limited. If you do so, your non-bid comments will be deleted.

Let the bidding begin! Let's make a difference for those on the Coast!
16th-Jul-2010 12:38 pm - Update!
YGO GX - Happy Yubel is skipping
Hey folks! A couple of things to note. First of all, our total for both auctions is now

OVER $4500

and the current tally for the second leg only is

$3578.45

This does not include any monies from our charitable V-gift, which I do not have numbers for (although I hope the answer will turn out to be "a lot").

IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY TURNED IN YOUR CONFIRMATIONS, PLEASE DO SO! If all bids for both auctions are turned in, we will reach our $5000 goal--BUT ONLY IF ALL AUCTIONS ARE TURNED IN! Offerers, if you have not contacted your bidders (or bidders, if you have not contacted your offerers), please do so! We will be sending out notices today to offerers who haven't yet turned in confirmations.

Second of all, oil stopped flowing into the Gulf yesterday!! Although only a temporary "fix" because of the amount of testing required to make sure the ocean floor isn't going to crack and start spouting elsewhere, THIS IS GREAT NEWS. If only for a few hours, the onslaught against our wildlife and an entire ecosystem has been reduced to only what's already in the water. The cleanup and restoration involved will be massive, though, which is why we're also announcing . . .

Third of all, the third leg of auctions! These will take place

1 AUGUST to 14 AUGUST

and will feature five categories: Words, Art, Audio/Media, Graphics, and Miscellaneous (which will now include all food offerings). Please pass the word on to your friends and fandoms, and let's try to make this the biggest leg yet!

Y'all are amazing!

--Ninalyn
14th-Jul-2010 06:40 pm - Tying up some loose ends.
Hey folks,

It's been 13 days since auction-end, and there are still some confirmations floating around out there that we don't have yet. If you haven't yet confirmed for your bidders because your bidder has not yet contacted or confirmed to you, please comment to this post with their username so we can contact them.

ALL POSTS ARE SCREENED for the privacy of both offerers and bidders (we're not making a Wall of Shame here, we just want to find out what's going on so we can see where we stand against our goal of topping $5000 for both auctions). This post is for BOTH AUCTION #1 AND AUCTION #2. If you've received a PM from the mods asking "¿que pasa?", there is no need to reply to us both there and here (actually, we'd prefer here, just to make things easier).

If you have your bidder's confirmation in hand and simply haven't put it up yet, please do so here for Auction #2 and here for Auction #1.

Thanks,

--the mod team
13th-Jul-2010 03:37 pm - Thank you, LJ!
YGO GX - Happy Yubel is happy
Hey folks!

Small budget getting you down because you're not sure what to offer and have very little money to bid? No fear: LiveJournal is partnering with gulf_aid_now to help extend our reach and get more money where it's needed most right now, and has released a charity-based V-gift you can purchase for 99 cents from their V-gift shop (they've also been kind enough to make it one of the top featured gifts, so you can also get to it straight from the LJ homepage). All proceeds from the V-gift will be going to the Oil Spill Response Fund set up by the National Wildlife Federation.

Purchasing it will put a gull and turtle (drawn for us by the lovely northwindgale and coloured by, er . . . me, so if it looks odd you know who to blame for that ク_ク;;) on either your profile or the profile of a friend you choose, and will send 99 cents to the NWF's Oil Spill Response Fund. Those dollar donations add up quickly (she said, looking at the huge number of $1-5 bids that are a large chunk of that $3300 mentioned in the post below), so spread the word to your friends and consider adopting a gull and turtle for your profile!

The mod team would like to thank the LJ staff for their support in helping us spread the word and make a greater impact for those who need it, and as always, the wider LJ community for making that impact!

You guys are AWESOME!!

12th-Jul-2010 01:17 am - The statmaster arrives.
YGO GX - Happy Yubel is happy
Okay, not really a "stat" master, more like I have this nice new computer that can do maths better than I can. We interrupt this broadcast to give a huge shout-out to everyone who has participated in Gulf Aid Now, because donations for the second auction currently stand at $2775.45, with total donations for both auctions at

$3702.95

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!

Cautious optimism is in order for stopping the Deepwater Horizon leak this weekend with another containment effort being made, but even when contained the leak will leave a massive, long-term spill behind to be taken care of (cleanup efforts for the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill continued until 1992 and there are still Alaskan beaches and shores saturated with oil and tar balls), so we will be running a third leg at the end of this month. All of you guys are AMAZING and not all auctions are confirmed yet (including a couple from Auction #1, so if you guys could get those in soon, please, that'd be great), so there's more great news to come (let's see if we can break $5000!). In the meantime, the mod team would also like to give a huge shout-out and THANK YOU!!! to those who have been donating above the amount they actually bid; your "extra" donations currently comprise almost 10% of the total donations for Auction #2 and are an awesome boost to our fundraising efforts!!

And if you"re interested in some other Auction #2 fun facts:Collapse )

Repeating: You guys. ROCK!!!

--Ninalyn
To all offerers: thank you very much! This auction wouldn't have been possible without you! With the auction now at its end, the bidders can start making their donations and confirming to you.

When they do, we'd be very grateful if you left us a note in this post to confirm that they have donated and the amount they donated, using this little template:

This is also an appeal to the offerers from the first auction post: if you have not confirmed your donation yet please do so asap in this thread! If you are an Auction #1 offerer and still have not heard from your bidder, please contact one of the mods. Again, this is for Auction #1, not the current auction (Auction #1 was the small one where all the lots were in a single post, instead of separated by category).

Thank you all so much for your help! You were amazing!

EDIT: 3:45pm PDT 8 July: confirmed donations stand at $1771.45!! Thanks to everyone who's participated, you guys are amazing!
6th-Jul-2010 09:12 am - The second auction is now over!

THE SECOND AUCTION IS NOW OVER.

The community has now been screened. If your bid isn't screened, congratulations, it got in! If it is, I'm sorry, but your bid didn't make it through in time. We will keep the community screened for a bit, while we start tallying all the auctions, make a masterlist and start alerting the winning bidders. Offerers can leave messages for their winning bidders once the community gets unscreened again, which should be in one or two hours.

Any comments, questions, bid disputes etc. can be sent to one of the mods or asked in the FAQ post.

THANK YOU TO ALL OFFERERS AND BIDDERS!
PLEASE READ - Auction Closing Procedure

Please read this post through completely before asking questions.

What will happen?

Bidding ends today July 5th at 0:00 am PDT. This is 3 am EDT (Eastern Daylight Time/US East Coast timezone) or 7 am UTC on July 6th. To prevent bids from being shown after that, the community will be screened. Any bids not shown in the community don’t count.

Thank you all for your support! You’ve been absolutely wonderful!

EDIT: Ninalyn here to let you all know that confirmation may take a little longer than expected; I'm currently on my way to the ER (nothing life-threatening, just incredibly painful) and don't know if I'll be around (and not-drugged-up enough) to help--I'll try to be, but no guarantees. Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who has offered or bid, and thank you in advance for your patience as the other mods start the confirmation process!
5th-Jul-2010 01:21 pm - Today...
... Would be an amazing day to browse through the threads, find an offer you like, and bid on it before the auction closes! The auction will close today July 5th at midnight PDT. Take care, this is at 7am GMT or 3am EDT (Eastern Daylight Time/US East Coast time zone) on July 6th. If you're unsure about how much time you have left, here you can find a handy countdown clock.

When the time comes, we will close all threads to new offers and bids, and start on the confirmation process, but in the meantime there are still many amazing offers, and some of them would love to get bids. So go ahead, take a look, bid on that offer you'd love to bid on! Go on, there's still time for some last-minute bidding!
